The new law for the ministry of Construction and Housing (law No. 62 for the year1987) , according to the new legislation the duties of the ministry are as follows:

1-     The suggestion of plans in the fields of buildings and housing, road and bridges, the execution of civil airports in accordance with the general plans of the country.

2-     Conducting special studies in the fields of construction and special studies in the technical and economic importance of these projects in a way to make the transfer of knowledge and techniques appropriate for the country

3-     Putting the designs, and work plans for projects through the ministries companies and Iraqi, Arab and foreign consultants.

4-     Conducting quality control work and the participation in preparing standards in the construction field.

5-     Executing its projects through its executive companies, or Iraqi contractors through bidding, or through direct invitation.

6-     Supervising the projects that the ministry is executing.

7-     Executing projects of other parties in Iraq or outside Iraq through its companies or consultancies as a contractor.

8-     Maintenance of general roads like highways that are out of the limits of Baghdad’s Mayoralty and municipalities, and the maintenance of bridges and protection , the ownership of this land to these projects
